Learn more This Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT)/Mammography (M) position is assigned to the Veteran's Healthcare Facility, Radiology Service within the Albany Stratton VAMC. This position will support general radiology, fluoroscopy procedures to include the operating room and GI studies along with Mammography on an "as needed" basis by Union contract. The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT)/Mammography employee at this level is fully functional as a DRT and can carry out the assigned tasks independently. Technologist will rotate assignments to include general radiology, operating room, fluoroscopy procedures and IV starts. The Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (DRT), Mammography Technologist employee at this level is fully functional as an advanced DRT and can carry out the assigned tasks independently. The position requires advanced ARRT certification in Diagnostic Radiography (R) and Mammography (M). Major duties of this position include, but are not limited to: This specialty modality requires specific knowledge of breast imaging examinations including Quality Assurance (QA), Quality Control (QC), mammography, and extensive knowledge of Mammography Quality Standards Act (MSQA), ACR accreditation in mammography, tomography, breast ultrasound, breast ultrasound interventional procedures, stereotactic biopsy, and breast MRI. The incumbent will have administrative duties, including the performance and documentation of QC required to maintain compliance with all QC and QA requirements as per VHA policy, FDA/MQSA regulations, and ACR standards in mammography digital breast tomosynthesis, breast ultrasound, breast ultrasound interventional procedures, stereotactic biopsy, and breast MRI. Assists with organizing and managing a comprehensive QA/QC program within the breast imaging section and assisting the department at annual FDA/MQSA inspections. The incumbent works closely with technologists, radiologists, clinicians, and clerical staff to assure optimum QC, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic exam results, and patient satisfaction. Assist with ensuring all personal certifications and qualifications are continuously monitored and kept up to date as required by the accrediting bodies. This includes personal qualifications, continuing experience, and educational experience required by MSQA for all the breast imaging physicians, technologists, and medical physicists. Assists with tracking and coordinating annual and semiannual equipment inspections and preventative maintenance with Biomedical Engineering, and reviews and acts upon their recommendations. Provide services in mammography, including performing very difficult and highly specialized radiographic examinations of the breast mammography utilizing a variety of specialized procedures that require precise positioning producing quality results. Sets up the exam room, assuring sufficient quantities of sterile supplies, and assures all needed equipment is present and in working order. Provides quality patient care when receiving, explaining the procedure, and positioning the patients. Sets the correct technical factors, sets up and adjusts accessory equipment, sets the required exposure for the requested procedure, secures the confidence and cooperation of the patient during the examination procedures, and recognizes exceptional diagnostic challenges. The incumbent tailors the exam to meet challenges and notifies the radiologist of significant findings that require immediate attention. Knowledge of breast anatomy and physiology including location, appearance, and function of the breast, and knowledge of changes to the breast caused by common medical and surgical diseases. Performs all aspects of Mammography imaging to include all breast imaging examinations including QA, mammography, and interventional procedures of the breast. Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions Performs diagnostic mammograms on patients with identified breast problems.
