The Department of Diagnostic, Molecular and Interventional Radiology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) has an open one-year position in the Body MRI Fellowship program for the 2025-2026 academic year. The program is overseen by Dr. Sara Lewis MD, Program Director, and Dr. Joseph Weissbrot MD, Associate Program Director. The fellows learn how to perform and interpret abdominal imaging examinations with a heavy emphasis on MRI. While we concentrate on MRI, training also includes thoracic, abdominal, and pelvic computed tomography (CT) as well as procedures including CT- and ultrasound-guided biopsy and women’s imaging. The overarching objectives of the program are to train radiologists to become abdominal imaging experts and to prepare them to assume leadership roles in Radiology.
The Body MRI Fellows receive training on cutting edge imaging equipment, learn innovative imaging methods, such as functional imaging with diffusion-weighted images, perfusion imaging, relaxometry, and elastography. Our fellows will gain experience in hepatobiliary (including liver iron and fat quantification, MR elastography) and transplant imaging (including MR angiography), pancreas MRI/MRCP, renal cancer and MR urogram, rectal MR, gynecologic MR, prostate imaging, MR enterography, and dynamic pelvic floor MRI. The fellows are therefore trained comprehensively in all aspects of body MRI.
The clinical experience is unparalleled and highly diverse in terms of pathology, with a typical case load of approximately 80 cases per day. The clinical training for Body MRI fellows includes rotations through body MRI, body CT, abdominal/pelvic ultrasound, and elective time, which can include PET/CT, breast imaging, thoracic/cardiac imaging, and musculoskeletal imaging. Training for Body MRI fellows takes place at The Mount Sinai Hospital. Our facilities have more than 14 MRIs, including five 3T scanners, one 7T with whole body capabilities, and a PET/MRI system. Our fellows interpret body MRI examinations performed at MSH, as well as the Proton Center, and outpatient practices in the area.
The fellows also learn through both formal didactics and interdisciplinary conferences. We also expect the fellows will participate in monthly journal clubs and weekly case conferences in radiology as well as in multidisciplinary conferences with liver surgical oncology, pathology, liver transplant, hepatology, urology, gastroenterology, and oncology.
Performing abdominal imaging research is an integral and required component of this training program. The fellows are encouraged to become involved with both translational and clinical research. Fellows typically participate in at least one retrospective or prospective research study that is presented at the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), Society of Abdominal Radiology (SAR), the Society of Advanced Body Imaging (SABI) or the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) meetings. Our fellows have regularly published in radiology journals, routinely present at national meetings, and have won awards for their research.
